If your guests want to see a 'real old English pub', bring them here. The Flask's 18th-century wood-panelled interior, with its fireplaces, bottle-glass windows and labyrinth of snug rooms, is bound to enchant; then you can tell them that Dick Turpin is said to have hidden in the cellar. This is no museum piece, though: it's a favourite with all quiet after-work types, families, and gaggles of local youth some weekends. The big front yard is Highgate's top outdoor eating spot, where space is often at a premium. The food is sturdy grub (great steak sandwiches) with a few gastro touches; the fine drinks list runs to good ales (Adnams, London Pride), Czech lagers and wines.

I grew up in a village in the East Midlands, studied in Oxford and have now lived and worked in London for going on 4 years. I love living in this...

I like this pub but the food is a disaster. I arrived at 12pm, opening time, and the ideal time to order a Sunday roast without worrying that the kitchen had run out. Rib of beef was my choice, accompanied by green beans, carrots, roast and mashed potatoes and a yorkshire pudding. At £11.95 I was expecting something impressive. I couldn't have been more disappointed. The beef was red raw, none of the fat had been trimmed off, the vegetables looked dead from too much cooking, and the yorkshire pudding was burnt in parts. I then made an another mistake of ordering pudding. Described as an "almond, pear and chocolate torte" it was more like a lump of sponge cake with no almonds, no pear, and about 5 chocolate sprinkles.
Do not go to this pub if you want a Sunday roast!!!
The food (Sunday roasts in my experience) can be a little hit and miss, but for general atmosphere and warmth of surroundings, this place is excellent. There is a large outside seating area and the inside is very cosy with lots of nooks and cranny's!
We went to the Flask with some friends on a Sunday, hoping for a nice meal. I don't think i have ever been so disappointed. Food was cold, some of seemed to have been coocked and rehated in the microwave, and you could hardly tell if it tasted of anything.
The Flask has possibly the worst service i have experienced. We asked the staff if we could get the table cleanded and they happily returned a dry tissue so we could clean it ourselves... When the food finally was served by one of their "trained" staff, they left it us to get it out on the table. Nobody working there seemed to have any interest in the customers or what is expected of pub staff. We will never return
