Bars & Pubs

  • Thanks to a plug in the NME, one of Hackney's finest is now (on a Saturday night at least) wall-to-wall ironic outfits. We saw beauties (and a few beasties) sporting ocelot, sequins, space invader jumpers and - for some reason we couldn't fathom - a lot of unusual scarves as they supped Czech beer and real ale (Pride, Brakspear Bitter, Woodforde's Wherry). There are plenty of good wines by the glass too (from £3.40). Another draw is one of the best, free jukeboxes in London: Martha & the Muffins, Dolly Parton and the Temptations. No wonder there's always a party going on. Monday's popular quiz sees more beards, fewer sequins. Sadly, prices seem to have risen with the pub's profile: a pint of Guinness at £3.40 - in Dalston!

You said it: £3.40 a pint is ridiculous for the inner city waterhole. I rather stay in Chelsea and Camden than venturing out one more time east of Regent's Park. I hated the place and the local crowd.
