Wanstead has its fair share of chain-bar monstrosities but this place has kept its character as a much-loved local at the heart of the Victorian Nightingale Estate. A smartly painted exterior announces similar attention to detail within: the brass is gleaming and the glasses polished at the central island bar, where ales such as Woodforde's Wherry, Nelson Pieces of Eight and more familiar offerings from Courage and Fuller's are kept in tip-top condition. There's a reasonable wine list too. Banquettes curve around the interior and the large screen TV to the rear is not too overpowering. The traditional pub grub (with fishy leanings) is popular.
