This much celebrated Chelsea success story proves that it is possible to transform a local boozer into something more refined without making a total pig's ear of it. The appeal lies partly in the characterful yet sympathetic decor - turquoise panelled walls, high red ceilings, beautiful mirrors and eccentric, Victoriana-style collectors' cases full of butterflies and crabs - which lends the place a relaxed, bohemian air. But the real star here is the food, served in an upstairs dining room and, from a more condensed menu, in the bar. Try such delights as hare and foie gras terrine (£8) or caramelised scallops in jerusalem artichoke purée (£18). Bona fide fried swine ears are thankfully no longer available as snacks, but the excellent Pig's Ear ale (from the Uley Brewery in Gloucestershire) is still on tap, along with Deuchars IPA, Kronenbourg and Guinness, in addition to an upmarket wine list.

I've been living in London for a year now having moved here for work and starting to get settled, but still plenty to see. Like most people though...
