Renamed after an album by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, this basement bar was previously called Smersh. But if the owners are redecorating, it's clearly a work in progress: the walls are still painted Soviet red and the odd bit of Russian poster art remains on show, in competition with the new black-and-white mural of three hepcats that decorates the red velvet drape-screened stairwell. It's a basic and unpretentious space, but cosy nonetheless, with stools set both at the weather-beaten bar and against one wall, and more relaxed seating in a small, sunken lounge area through the archway. Serious tipplers can pick from one of several Polish vodkas on offer alongside speciality rums and tequilas or opt for a jug of sangria, while the (bottled) beer choice is limited to two: Budvar or Carlsberg. Fentimans soft drinks are also available. Soft lighting on a low ceiling adds to the intimate feel, as does the music policy - DJs play anything from reggae to ambient electronica, while occasional live acts tend toward the unplugged variety.

It's just brilliant. Top-notch DJs play there because they've fallen in love with the place (I know because I asked them), live acoustic sets from artists who are fast becoming house hold names, great drinks, staff with character who make you feel like you matter to them. Why oh why can't there be more bars like this...because they broke the mould when they made this place. It's a bit rough around the edges but then that what a proper bar is supposed to be like isn't it?
