While nearby Old Street and its environs become an increasingly manic party district, the hidden-away William IV keeps its cool as a civilised, homely pub where you can escape for some laid-back drinks or a square meal. The decor is modestly trendy: walls and wooden furniture are painted white and embellished with a potted assortment of portraits, photographs, stuffed animals and other objects. Downstairs, the main bar is a single room which is small, but the clever use of big communal tables maximises available space, and in good weather additional tables are placed outside. Upstairs there's a dedicated dining room, but the same menu is available throughout. Drinks include Black Sheep, London Pride, Hoegaarden, Leffe on tap and a fair selection of inexpensive wines.
