Bars & Pubs

  • Bethnal Green Working Men's Club

  • Tucked down a Bethnal Green side street, this East End working men's club has been responsible for the whole burlesque and variety show explosion. It might look like Phoenix Nights, with grotty carpets and a cheap as chips bar, but the line-up is inimitable. Lucha Britannia, with its Mexican wrestlers and German nurses, is held one Thursday a month, and Whoopee presents Hip Hip, the essential burlesque try-out night, on the second Friday of the month – check the website for upcoming events, as the line-up changes frequently. Be warned, though: if you're not there by 9pm and dressed in your vintage best, you probably won't get in.

Some friends and I visited BGWMC on Saturday night for the Cream Revue 50s night. It was my first ever visit, and I've come away with really mixed feelings about it.
Lets get the bad bit out of the way first. The door staff are without doubt the rudest that I have ever encountered! Having read reviews commenting on the same, I was very careful to arrive early, and had made an effort on outfit front. Despite this, the guys on the door were less than welcoming and seemed hesitant to let us in. Friends that arrived later - but before 9 - told me that the doormen had asked them 'what they thought they were wearing' and 'why hadn't they made any effort?'. Other friends were getting out of their taxi when they were told from across the road not to bother getting out as they weren't coming in - no real reason given, but a v agressive tone. And the doormen refused to give their name when asked - a sure sign they knew they were being out of order. Complaints have been sent directly to the venue!!
On the positive side - if you do manage to get past the door staff, and aren't too put out by the rude manner in which they will almost certainly have dealt with you, you are guaranteed an amazing night. The music and other entertainment was ace. Fairly cheap booze, and free fairy cakes. Toilets were a bit small (only two cubicles) but fair enough. No probs at all with staff inside the venue, and a nice atmosphere amongst your fellow jivers.
Despite this I'd really hesitate before going back - purely because I wouldn't want to deal with the bouncers again. A shame, this place is really let down by the cretins on the door.
