Although this chain of wine bars was launched in the 1960s, many of its sites look as old as the founding date of Davy’s wine merchants: 1870. Now owned by the fifth generation of the Davy family, most of the 40 outlets are in central London, with some in the suburbs. They all look similar: dark, often basement interiors, with prints on the walls, wood panelling, sawdust on the floor, and people in suits. Davy’s venues are particularly good for large groups as the drinking area is spacious and big tables are to be had – and there’s no VIP ropes or guest list in sight. Don’t expect to find the latest cocktail or tunes, but enjoy the generally relaxed air nonetheless. Food is a classic array of sandwiches, pâtés and cheeses.
