  • Mitre

  • Food-focused pub in Holland Park

  • By Ben McFarland

  • Having adopted a variety of guises over the last few years, The Mitre has been spruced up all smart and seductive by the new owner Realpubs, who also run The Pembroke in Earl’s Court, the Duke of Sussex in Chiswick and the North London Tavern in... well, you can probably guess.

Food is firmly to the fore here, with a raised dining area and a bistro feel, but it can still lay claim to being a dapper-looking drinker should a pint or some plonk be the priority.

Despite its sizeable square footage, the mood is mollified with candles, Chesterfield sofas and gun chairs, sepia-tinted prints and American diner-style booths.

With a front terrace and big patio doors that open out, it’s well set for the summer too. The service was spot-on.

It's definitely more Holland Park than Ladbroke Grove, though – lots of neatly knotted scarves and hair higher than it ought to be.

The drinks selection is far better than most gastro-leaning pubs. A stand-up selection of beers includes ales from Sierra Nevada, Duvel, Anchor, Chimay and Purity, and there’s an extensive and eclectic wine list and a wealth of whiskies.

There’s a choice of bar snacks or a more extensive restaurant menu that celebrates the seasons and dabbles in more daring dishes such as roast partridge, pork belly or braised shin of beef with black pepper dumplings.

Groups can get their laughing gear around hot seafood, duck or smoked fish platters.

What a great place! Clearly they have sorted out the heating issues since the reviewer below visited, it is always roasting in there now. Maybe even too hot!
The food is fantastic (from the steak right the way down to the sausage rolls on the bar snacks menu). We eat here every Sunday without fail, the roasts are incredible. It's not cheap but at the same time i think you get value for money. And the service is spot on; warm, attentive and friendly. It is clearly run by people who care about what they are doing.

A group of friends and i went to the mitre for a birthday lunch on a cold, snowy Saturday afternoon. We were seated in close proximity to the conservatory seating, which probably was part of the reason for us being cold, as well as a vent above us blowing cold air. We asked if anything could be done to stop the vent and we were told they couldnt help. On observing other diners in the pub most were wearing their jackets - the only area that appeared warm was downstairs in the toilets! Apart from it being very cold which made enjoying our meals harder, some of the meals ordered were not really worth the price. I had the stuffed squash, and got one small slice of butternut squash with some vegetables on top. The service was OK but we did wait at least 25mins for a drinks order to arrive after we reminded the staff we were still waiting. We had been looking forward to a cosy afternoon in the pub and trying some of their whiskeys. However due to it being so cold we had to leave without dessert and seek a warmer venue to continue our afternoon birthday celebrations.
