The Pineapple's outward appearance hasn't altered in years. Tucked away in a maze of backstreet terraces, it's a dapper, self-respecting little Victorian establishment, adorned with hanging baskets and plaster pineapples. Inside, though, it's all change. Gone are the front bar's cosy, battered red velvet banquettes and moth-eaten curtains; in their place is sleek leather seating, bare windows and metallic fleur-de-lis wallpaper. Happily, the splendid bar remains - a gleaming mahogany affair with etched mirrors and gilt lettering - though the pumps have a pretty lacklustre line-up of ales and ciders. Regulars seem to have taken the transformation in their stride; if it's packed in the front, retreat to the airy conservatory or lovely walled garden.
