Alistair Hook's laudable Meantime Brewery flagship is based on the training and recipes he gleaned at age-old institutions in Germany. In-house Meantime produces London Stout, Pale Ale, Helles, Kölner, Union, Strawberry and Raspberry varieties, available on draught at reasonable prices. Hook has also been at pains to provide a global selection by the bottle: rare Cantillon Gueuze from Anderlecht, Brussels, Aecht Schlenkerla Marzen smoked beer from Bamberg, and so on. Wines, starting at £3.15 a glass, include a Spy Valley sauvignon blanc and Punto Alto pinot noir. Throw in proper cheeses, steak and stout pies and it's no wonder the Union is reliably busy.
