  • Eating & drinking Bars & pubs
  • More pub than gastropub (in spite of the quality food), the Cat & Mutton can be a disappointing dining venue. On a Tuesday night we sat at a busy, beer-stained table, ordered from the bar, and were charged prices not unusual for a mid-range restaurant where coats are taken and table service comes as standard. Our starter of admittedly very tasty scallops (four) on a pile of wild garlic and pickled lemon cost £7.50. A main course of tuna loin – perfectly seared – came on a pile of buttery spinach but without a carb in sight (£14); a well-cooked fillet steak on more rocket was better balanced with good chunky chips and aïoli. A cheese plate took the biscuit: two meagre slices of gruyère, a cube of blue cheese (more danish than stilton) and an unspecified goat’s cheese served with a few water biscuits, slices of apple and celery sticks for £7. Attractive but distracted service meant that a glass of wine ordered at the bar was only half-full, and between the till and the bar our waitress forgot whom she was serving. At these prices we expect much more. House wines (from a decent list) start at £12. Beers include Shepherd Neame’s Spitfire and Adnams Spindrift.

Good local gastropub. Going thro a better patch at the moment (spring 2008). Too noisy.

Having gone here a few times (not my choice..), I have experienced service ranging from great, to downright terrible.
But one thing has remained the same- the overpriced boring food. Watch out, its not worth half the asking price..

This is one of these places where mates get served first. The wine was the wrong temperature and far too overprized for what it was. The beer selection is not convincing.
I wouldn't recommend it and I certainly wouldn't go there again.

Woeful service, which for the money they charge is a real smack in the face. staff seem very distracted, we couldn't order at the bar, were told that someone would come over, they didn't. we had to find a member of staff to take the order, then find another one when the food hadn't come after 45 minute wait. and whilst the food was ok, i expected it to be wonderful after they had seemingly taken so much time to prepare it, sadly, although ok, it wasn't worth the restaurant type price - avoid this place, looks nice, would be ok if you're just drinking i guess, but hopeless as a restaurant
