The Anchor & Hope is wedged on the bottom of a hill, between a housing estate and the River Lea. The lack of impressive decor is more than made up for by the hearty cheer of the red-faced locals. Its position also attracts walkers who sit quietly sucking bitter through their beards. Sports lovers might be disappointed to find the flat-screen TV is not tuned in to Sky. Aside from the standard draughts there's the option of London Pride, ESB and a guest beer - plus bottles of Honeydew and Magners in the fridge. On warm days unwind on the fixed metal bench and table sets outside.

There are some ambitions I may never fulfill: // write a book // be an electronic music producer playing live at Glastonbury // finish writing this...
I find it unfair to comment on this place without having experienced the dining room and ambienceproper. As it has a no bookings policy, I feel the reviewer would have been better suited either arriving early to avoid disappointment or going to McDonalds instead.
The food here has always been of the highest quality and very well cooked. I think the only disappointment I've had here were some Orkney Squat Lobsters which I found bland but then, they don't hold an awful lot of flavour anyway. Their Confit is to die for and the snails and lava bread i could almost have as a main it was so delicious. The Razor Clams here were sublime and so fresh, I dribble as I type with the memory! The service is sometimes a little erratic but I think that it is part of the charm of this little gem. With good wine at very reasonable prices and a buzzy atmosphere, this place is one of my favourites for an after work, pre-cinema meal; being just around the corner from London's best Cinema in Waterloo.
To sum up; definately get here early but be prepared to wait. A little patience can be so rewarding in today's hectic, fast food, neon world. Good thing come to those who...
Yes, it's packed. Yes, you wait for a table. Yes, the waiting staff must be absolutely frazzled, but they are very friendly with it. But it is absolutely worth the wait - the food is fantastic. We had starters of grilled razor clams and cuttlefish, which were divine. Followed these with the steak, hollandaise and chips - the chips were great, the steak so huge that we (to our shame) asked for a doggy bag (although no doggy was going to get its chops on something that good quality). If you want a quick meal and then to go off somewhere else, this is not for you. If you are feeling chilled, and fancy a leisurely drink and meal, then make a night of it.
