  • With 13 beers on its weekly real ales list, drawn from Edinburgh to Cornwall, the Junction Tavern is a haven for those looking for a more characterful pint than lager to enjoy with their meal. Oxfordshire’s fruity-tasting Old Hooky was well kept, clean and at the right temperature. The wine list starts at £13.50. Generously sized dishes range from homely to show-off cheffy. Two vegetarian options featured on the list of six main courses. Skate was fresh-tasting and moist, ribeye steak wonderfully tender. Poshest was pancetta-wrapped pork fillet served with teeny onions, clear rich gravy and a swoosh of lightly spiced pumpkin purée. Shame we had to wait around 45 minutes for the dishes, but waiters were friendly, efficient and worked purposefully throughout the busy evening. Two desserts – cream-laden rice pudding with chunks of spiced pineapple, and cardamon-scented plum crumble – were nice twists on traditional ideas. The dark wood interior is roomy yet cosy. At the back is a light but less atmospheric conservatory; if it’s not raining, better to grab a table in the heated garden.
