London's best review, food and drink news
The much-loved Dog & Bell is Deptford's best bar. That it's dark, foreboding and located in no man's land matters not a jot. Regulars beat a path to its door for a cherry-picked selection of real ales (currently two from the Dark Star stable and Sparrow's Nest) and Beck's at less than £3 a pint. More than that, they come for the communal atmosphere. The bar billiards table stands neglected as everyday folk and Deptford's age-old boho crowd mingle, usually in the side room now dominated by Fred Aylward's striking punk art. Proper meals (liver and bacon, chicken masala) are served too.
