American Bar
Entrance to the Savoy Hotel may be a veritable fanfare of otherworldly opulence, but there’s something strangely cosy about the art deco American Bar, which has been shaking and stirring high society’s ‘mixed drinks’ for more than a century. Atmospherically, the emphasis remains firmly on the kind of jazz that dresses for dinner: well-mannered waiters in white ties bustle between the tables and an elegant curved bar with a space-age Kubrick aesthetic; music comes courtesy of a besuited crooner at the central grand piano; and the walls are replete with black and white prints of the Newmans, Streisands and Rossellinis of this world. Cocktails are first-class: the Espresso Martini kicks like a mule, thanks to the mix of Absolut Vanilla, Kahlua and a coffee shot, while long drinks like the potent Monkey Trouble (Monkey Shoulder whisky, with peach and apricot brandy) come served in glasses more usually seen holding knickerbocker glories. A real treat.
