Bars & Pubs

  • Marquess Tavern

  • Made a certifiable hit by Huw Gott and Will Beckett – including winning the Time Out gastropub of the year title in 2006 – The Marquess Tavern was taken over by a group of self-declared loyal customers in July 2008. While they felt the need to make some changes, the drinks list remains far stronger than your average boozer, let alone your trendy wine-lovers' 'gastroed' pub. In addition to the entire Young's range you'll find myriad bottled beers (Coopers pale ale, Chimay Rouge, Leffe Brun, Kasteel Cru, Modelo, Brooklyn lager and more) plus an extensive choice of malt whiskies and a comparatively brief Europe-focused wine list starting around £14 a bottle.

The food was okish, but definitely not great! At least not as succulent as it should be for those high prices! I would not recommend the Restaurant!

Just awful. We arrived at the cosy pub for Sunday lunch with he family and were greeted by pleasant staff. That was the good news. The bad news was when we ordered the food.... the first thing that wentwrong is the food took a very long time to arrive.
The first to arrive was my sisters rissotto (which was cold and too strong... made with blue cheese). Then I got my whole seabass... it was RAW! In the kitchen, they had simply put the wrong fish on my plate and it was completely and utterly raw. Hadn't even touched the pan. To make the matter worse, they took the fish off the bill (least they can do as I didn't eat the replacement one either) and no further discount. It was , I thought, the worst meal I ahve had (or not had) in a very long time.
Oh. and they still added service charge even though they served me a whole raw seabass.
