This big corner bar used to be a chain pub of the lowest order. Nowadays, though, it's far from budget. What makes this gastropub stand out is its on-site microbrewery, which produces fine McLaughlin's ale, its long wine list, reflecting the owner's Antipodean roots, and its food. It's proved a real hit in an area surprisingly starved of good-value eateries. And though the bright and frenetic feel doesn't lend itself to cosy romance, the open kitchen's 'farm to fork' sourcing - the cod comes from Cornwall, the beef from Suffolk - makes for an all- round happier meal.
