Truckles of Pied Bull Yard
Hidden in an enclosed square next to the London Review Bookshop, this branch of wine chain Davy’s is a two-decked affair. Upstairs, spotlights and light pine furniture give unwelcome reminders of All Bar One. Downstairs is better: a partitioned cellar bar, darker and more intimate, stretches far underground. Local office workers drink pints of Old Wallop served in pewter tankards. Otherwise, a dozen of Davy’s own wines – fine French claret (£4.75/ £17.75), Australian chardonnnay (£4.85/£18.25), Rioja of Marqués de Vitoria, Alavesa (£4.75/£17.95) – come by the glass or bottle. But Truckles’ key USP is its outdoor space: the pub’s tables colonise most of Pied Bull Yard, creating a pleasant boozy piazza when weather allows.
