A cornucopia of tack awaits the fussy crowd in this once-tatty Shoreditch boozer, popular with both gays and straights.

The interior is quite disturbing: Chinese masks, doctored romantic paintings, cut-out black hearts and so on. Focus often falls on the sounds emitting from the DJ's decks, set between the door and the bar-cum-funfair-stall.

You don't need to hook a duck or shoot a gun at a playing card: pints of Moretti, Früli and Sagres are sold over the beaten-up bar for the usual Shoreditch prices, to drinkers sporting Jimmy Edwards moustaches and the kind of outfits that you might once have expected to see in the queue for a midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. New-found couples may get amorous in the bar's many darker corners.

I went for the first time this evening. I'd opened my rucksack already as I'm quite used it being searched when I enter bars in the west end (for obvious reasons). The doorman told me brusquely to open it properly by which I was quite confused. He then told me to stand aside saying 'you're not ok'. Then he asked me why my bag was so empty! His manner was so aggressive and rude, like I'd done something wrong already! By the time my friends came to see what was wrong, I'd had enough and went home. Obviously everyone understands the need for stringent security but this guy seemed out for an argument. I'll definitely be making a complaint and doubt I will go back again.
