The Napoleon Bar at Bistrotheque is one of the few cocktail bars in this part of east London, and in August 2011 it had a redecoration courtesy of Bombay Sapphire, the gin brand.
It's now apparently called the 'Gin Den', but there's not too much about the new decor to suggest a Hogarthian sump of immorality: not a single mother offered us a baby in exchange for a glass of old Tom.
The refurb has been overseen by local interior designers House of Hackney: walls are covered with the zoologically themed 'Hackney Empire' wallpaper; drapes and banquette have been redone in a baroque style.
Not much has changed about the drinks offer - the well-stocked back bar is put to good use in a small list of classic cocktails that show attention to detail.
It's dark, quirky and opulent, very at odds with the unremarkable Bethnal Green backstreet Bistrotheque resides on.
