Tucked down a dark street away from the Old Street hubbub, and named after an East End boxer who owned the place a half-century ago, this uncomplicated, late-opening Shoreditch favourite remains as mixed and welcoming as can be. In terms of food and drink, it lives up to its international billing.
Taps offering Asahi, Staropramen, Oranjeboom, Leffe (blonde and brown), Belle-Vue Kriek, Franziskaner and Guinness line the bar, while behind them sit bottles of Duvel, Chimay (red, white and blue), Red Stripe, Corona, Desperado, Beck's, Spitfire and Kopparberg cider.
Wines and cocktails cover the standards, which is more than can be said for the forward-thinking jazz musicians who offer regular entertainment alongside frequent club nights (soul, funk, world music). The food, naturally enough, is Thai, with most mains priced around £6.
