The Fox is an after-work magnet on Thursdays and Fridays, when you can hardly see the bar for bodies. Outside peak hours, though, it's a very pleasant place for a drink, just far enough from Shoreditch's main drag to ensure that it isn't dominated by bright young things.

Plus points include an attractive ground-floor room, modernised but not ruined, with a big central bar and etched-glass windows, moreish bar food dished up as small plates by the same kitchen that serves the lovely first-floor restaurant, and a generally relaxed vibe. The fine range of wines is complemented by a couple of ales; Harveys Sussex Best usually seems to be among them. Worth considering if you're in the area.

My partner has mentioned trying this Shoreditch boozer after work for a while now, so we thought it was about time to take a closer look at what we had seen through the window after cycling past.

Tuesday, 6:30pm and the bar was bustling with drinkers and diners alike, a solid choice of well looked after draft beers (Star, Becks, Hoegarrden to name a few) and some cracking real ale (Thanks to the barman for letting me try them all!) kept us occupied until the food arrived.

No bought in/reheated food here; my lamb steak was juicy, well cooked and served with the care and attention the cut of meat deserved. My partner ordered pork belly from the bar menu; which was crispy and accompanied with a tasty bean stew.

No room for deserts but the atmosphere and friendly staff kept us in for a glass of well sourced malbec before we pedalled off into the damp roads of Shoreditch.

Looking for the toilets (there in the basement btw) I had a sneaky look at the upstairs dining room and will most certainly be coming back!

Food 8/10
Atmosphere 8/10 (bar)
Value for money 9/10

Never had such bad service in my life.

Having booked this place beacuse of their varied menu (we had a few food allergies, veggies etc) we had a set menu of 3 choices starter, 3 choices main shoved in front of us and were told there was usually a full menu, but because of the private party downstairs the kitchen couldn't do that for us.

After waiting 2 hours for our cold starters to arrive, (we were the only people in the dining room) we had the manager come in with the plates and say, "yeah, sorry it's taken so long, but we have a private party going on downstairs and you were late getting here" (we were 10 minutes late, and had phoned ahead to tell them).

Thanks The Fox for ruining my friends birthday! All of you were rude and vile to a perfectly nice party of 11 people, who just wanted to eat their dinner. We didn't stick around for the main course to arrive we'd have been there till midnight
