This Islington backstreet is a notch above most of its N1 competitors.
First, the beers: Peroni, Sierra Nevada, Leffe, Früli, Schneider Weisse, Paulaner, Pilsner Urquell and Staropramen, all on draught, complemented by tap ales such as Landlord and Doom Bar.
Second, the wines: 20 in number, all but a couple available by both bottle and glass.
There's also the pub food, affordable and good enough.
Inside, high ceilings tower over etched mirrors and abundant greenery; there are a couple of outdoor tables too. Even when it's busy, the height of the rooms means acoustics that allow easy conversation. But the Island Queen's main asset is that it has personality in spades: it's a proper pub for people who want a proper drink.

I arrived for a casual dinner with a friend and put my card behind the bar to open a tab. The food was poor, my pie was burnt, however the rices are very reasonable and as we were seeking a nice atmosphere and conversation it seemed irrelevant. We had a few more drinks but at 11pm last orders were given - fair enough. The staff continued to shout aggressively at customers to leave the bar so my friend and I felt pressured to leave even though our drinks, ordered before last orders were not finished. When we went to settle the bill, promptly, it transpired that the staff had decided to charge my card without consultation at 22.48. When I stated I was unhappy that they had charged without my consultation, the barman stated he didn't feel it was his job to know where his customers were seated, even if they have a tab, or to ask their permission to "verify with signature" on the customer's card. The bill was inaccurate but similar to the value that we expected and at this point it seemed redundant to discuss further as the bar staff were clearly dismissive - he in fact walked off rolling his eyes and waving his hand in the air. It clearly states on the website that this bar is open until midnight on Sundays. Again barman ignored my comments. I was made to feel embarrassed and angry on what was supposed to be a relaxing evening, I think this venue provides no customer service and in fact bullies its customers.
