Montgomery Place keeps a low profile, its dark exterior embellished by a couple of tables outside in summer. Inside, the prime table just by the window is usually taken, as are the places at the bar; for intimacy, head, instead, to the more spacious back area.
Declaring that the bar takes its inspiration 'from the roaring era of Hemingway… and the rebirth of cool', the venue's thick, juicy menu contains plenty of variety: the extra-dry Montgomery Style martini blends ice-cold Tanqueray with a suspicion of Noilly Prat; the mint julep is built around Woodforde Reserve; and the Old Cuban is a combination of a mojito and a champagne cocktail. Look out, too, for in-house mixes such as the Silver Pine (Havana Club, Campari, grapefruit, agave nectar and passion-fruit syrup), created at the bar's now-closed sister operation Dusk in Battersea.

Tables outdoors ( 2, pavement ), Babies and children admitted ( afternoon Sat )I moved from Notting Hill area into Canary Wharf last spring and hadn't managed to make it back to some of my old neighborhood haunts until last night. I stopped in at one of my favorite drinking holes - Montgomery Place and was hugely disappointed. Not only has the award winning bar manager moved on (he is now at the Connaught Hotel in Mayfair) so had all the individuality and spirit selection as well.
As far as a cocktail menu goes they are still using the exact same one from at least 3 years ago. When I approached the bartender (or mixologist - as they prefer to be labeled these days) to ask why I was informed that although the menu hadn't changed the brands they use had (and so had the prices btw).
My only thought was, "yes, for the worse". Standard brands that you can purchase for a 10th the price in my local Waitrose and a cocktail menu from 2004 do not exactly inspire a return visit. It is a shame as this used to truly be one of the bars that put Notting Hill and London on the map of world's best bar.
