Down a cobbled spur off Brick Lane, this totally unfashionable boozer attracts by its very lack of pretention. Background sounds of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' battle with ambitious chatter about Leyton Orient's chances of making the play-offs as blokes sink pints of Sharp's Doom Bar, Crouch Vale Brewer's Gold, and Fuller's ESB and London Pride.
Everything on the menu, served beneath an awning proclaiming 'Mary's Pantry', seems to come with chips and cost £2.50; the quite wonderful white-and-tabby tomcat treats everyone with disdain, so don't even bother trying to win his favour.
Framed black-and-white photographs of the East End's past decorate a seen-it-all single bar room of faded red banquettes, and there's even a piano in the corner should you find yourself in urgent need of an old-fashioned knees-up.

great beer, great atmosphere..no pretensions - just a lovely pub and good mix of folk, friendly not full of pretentious gits. Hell, even played scrabble all afternoon there...no problem. Doom on tap, decent food..the little cobbled sidestreet its on has no traffic and a widish pavement ....the defacto patio and smoking area is therefore lovely. A permanent keeper.
This is a good old fashioned drinkers pub with a good range of real ales, friendly staff and a good atmosphere. You only have to look at the crowd outside to realise what a popular place it is. An excellent precursor to a Brick Lane curry!
Simply a pub. No poncing around, good beer, real people. What more could you want?
One of the best pubs in Londoan and a bastion of a great East end pub in the heart of trendy shoreditch ... Get a propper pint of ale and say hello to the fat pub cat that likes to sit on your lap.
