On a narrow bend by Hampstead Heath - where the danger of being knocked down by a school-run mum is as real to today's visitor as was being hijacked in Dick Turpin's day - you'll see signs proclaim 'Spaniards Inn 1565 AD' (said inn now stands by a large car park). They say Turpin was born here in 1705, a century before Keats wrote 'Ode to a Nightingale' in the beer garden.
The range of beers (Sierra Nevada, St Austell Tribute, Adnams Broadside, London Pride, Franziskaner and others) are as big an attraction as any historic tie-in, as is the huge outdoor eating area. The food menu might include Barnsley chops with Greek salad; the cheese plate favours this green and pleasant land. Expect a tussle for tables on bank holiday weekends.

Tables outdoors ( 80, garden ), Babies and children admitted, Function room ( 40 capacity )This is my local and have been going for 15 years, lured by the old building the absence of music and lovely food. Recently however the place has definitely taken a turn for the worse. The prices are starting to be silly, the choice of pints has become quite limited and the queues on a sunny afternoon are immense. In fact one unseasonably sunny weekend a few months ago they had completely run out of food which might be an issue to some people who travel far to get here. We were still rather loyal to our local after all that though. What broke the camel's back was an issue about a week ago. It was a Monday night and there were about 8 of us upstairs celebrating my partners birthday. After we finished our meal at about 10pm we were told that we cannot be served any more as we have had too much to drink. I would like to point out that we are all middle aged had a couple of glasses each a big meal and there was no one else upstairs that Monday night, the place was empty. Not even a voice was raised to be honest. It was clear that the stuff just wanted us to piss off early so they can go home. This was slightly insulting as some of our friends had traveled from various parts of London to come to our local and we have been going there twice a month for years not to mention how much we spent there that night. We all thought if they wanted us to leave they could say when we got there or even at the time that they wish to close early. Some of our friends only got there just in time for dinner so had only had 1 glass of wine and they were told they cannot be served any more too. I think we will have to find a new local. Shouldn't be too hard around here...
To begin, the menu was almost empty - hardly anything was left. The staff were rude. The toilets had bloody tissues and tampon wrappers on the ground, the toilet doors had no locks. The food took forever and my supposedly medium rare steak (£16.75) came out well done and dry. The rosemary potatoes had never seen rosemary in their life! My friends halloumi salad was a disgrace, it was so over cooked she couldnt cut the deep fried halloumi and it was cold and bland. The satff couldnt have cared less, and frankly they were a bit rude! I will never ever go here again.
Lovely old pub, just as dog-friendly as I'd read, good choice of beers and the food was excellent. Friendly staff too.
Not even worth one star. When we ordered food they said 35 mins, at 45mins someone came over and said sorry we forgot about you. Then the manager denied they had forgotten, 10mins later we got cold fish and chips. Toilets we dirty and need repairs. Not going back!
Stopped in here after a ramble on the Heath with our dog last Sunday. After being told the pub was "very dog friendly" we happily entered into the warmth and hubbub to wait for a spare table to come up. After a long wait and engaging in some table warfare with other patrons we finally were invited to share a table with a nice couple. Worth the wait though - delicious hearty roast meals were just what we were after. Loved the atmosphere that the open fire and low ceiling created. And the dog loved it too! Will be back, but hopefully to avoid the late afternoon rush of walkers.
