There's no velvet rope barring your way to the Connaught's destination bar, and no door-nazi attitude: you can just walk straight on in. And once you've done so, the service will be faultless. The room oozes sophistication, with modern touches (grey velvet wing-backed chairs, black-glass tables) that enhance the historic character of the space.
The drinks list charts the evolution of the cocktail, with each drink - the greatest hits of the last two centuries, more or less - well worth the expense. The wine list is exemplary, if pricey, with an emphasis on fine French marques.
Tip-top nibbles are free of charge; better, a tiny skewer of iced fruit on a silver dish appears with each cocktail as a palate-cleanser. Luxurious, elegant and discreet, the Coburg Bar is everything a good hotel bar should be.
