The local family history outlined on the exterior of this beautifully renovated public house
dates from 1127, and it's fair to say that any one of the landed Audley gentry down the centuries would have been proud of the appearance of this ornate Victorian establishment.
Personable, black-shirted girls of Mediterranean origin run the long main bar, lined with an impressive array of handpumps: Deuchars IPA, Wells Bombardier, Young's Gold, St Austell Tribute, Fuller's London Pride and Greene King Suffolk Swift might be among the ale choices.
The expansive, carved-wood and gilt interior is filled mostly by regulars, with this portion of Mayfair sitting a little off the tourist trail; perhaps inspired by the succulent meaty smells, many choose to line their stomachs with solid pub grub (steaks, burgers and the like).
