Unassuming and well run, this corner boozer isn't interested in living off its brief footnote in history (it was here, in 1974, that Lady Lucan reported the murder of the family nanny).
Guest ales are generally programmed on a week-by-week basis: Fuller's London Pride or St Austell Tribute might appear alongside regulars Black Sheep Ale and Timothy Taylor Landlord.
After a brief foray into the exotic, the menu has reverted to traditional English pub food (pies, fish 'n' chips). Tradesmen still drink here, as they did when master builder Thomas Cubbitt's employees - servants and footmen too - frequented the pub erected in his honour. The boxy interior and layout is related to their relative social status.
