'Genuine London boozer' pretty much covers it when it comes to this pub. Named in honour of the Irishman who's most famous today for founding the Spectator, the Steele is a fabulously raffish place, defined by the boozy chaos that invariably seems to follow an evening spent jostling for attention at its central bar or crouched around one of its sticky tables.

Within a dimly lit interior covered in portraits and street signs, talkative locals shoot the breeze over pints of ale (Timothy Taylor Landlord, Dark Star Hophead) and the occasional whisky; even the drunkest of drunks remain good-natured until chucking-out time. There's a grab-bag of live music - Irish folk, acoustic or open-mic, depending on the night and the week - while quiz nights and comedy clubs provide alternative entertainment.

NEW OWNERSHIP There used to be gorgeous Thai food for cheap prices here that the locals adored. The sweet old lady chef has now been booted out by big new owners in favour of yet another generic, boring pub menu with no imagination. I hear the lovely Thai chef has gone to pub elsewhere where I shall now be going in future!

We love the Steele's! Unpretetentious, it's rare that you won't end up talking to someone new if you want to; the only place in London where you'll see such a heartwarmingly diverse mixture of ages out in the same place, all rubbing along most nicely together. You'll meet aging session musician rockers, post-punk lady-queens, friendly locals, young musicians and starving artists - Often has great music nights too. It warms me cockles. Mmmm. Save Our Steeles!!!
