'The finest ale and eating house in Clerkenwell' says the board outside - and the Gunmakers does present a very good case. One of many gastropubs in the area, the Gunmakers also operates as a bar, with plenty of natter around the cosy front room.

The cask ales - Mad Goose Purity, Thornbridge Jaipur, Woodford's Wherry and Redemption Fellowship Porter - are consumed as readily as the wines from a list of 16 varieties, whose Italian influence harks back to the time when this area was Little Italy (frame-makers and organ-builders worked here, as did Hiram Maxim, inventor of the machine gun - hence the pub name).

Chilean El Descanso merlot and Türk Eiswein von Grüner Weltliner dessert wine might bookend your pork chop and asparagus, or rib-eye steak with French fries, rocket and garlic Pastis butter. Two bright spaces behind provide dining comfort.

The exterior looks good but the interior is modern and characterless. The beer choice is small but what we did have was very clean and good. However, sadly the very rude Landlord spoilt what would otherwise have been a good evening, we certainly won't be going back again, there are many other decent pubs in the area run by real Publicans who enjoy their work and creat a great atmosphere.
