The strange nameless hinterland between Fitzrovia and Camden has never offered too much in the way of drinking destinations. But the bar previously known as Positively 4th Street has, like Kerouac and Cassady on the road, taken a wild swing south from New York down to New Orleans and reopened as a Deep South-style cocktail den.

It's owned by the Shaker chain of bar schools, well-regarded academies for bartenders aiming to perfect their crafts. The bar has a comprehensive array of spirits used in a range of drinks that would be a lot easier to ask for if the names weren't so daft, such as 'It's Not Terry's It's Tin Tin's'. The cocktails, however, have a balance of own-made syrups and infusions, herbs and spices, with minimal show-off mixology.

Staff we sought out for guidance were very knowledgeable, as you might expect.

Food ranges from the recognisably Southern (gumbo, jambalaya, hush puppies) to the more generically American - mini sliders, 'soul fried chicken bites', chocolate brownies.

On our visit there were no spare seats, and the revellers by the bar made it hard to enjoy the refinement offered by the cocktail list. But it's a handsome space, with a piano in the corner and an eye-catching bar complete with glass-doored cabinets and a library of classic cocktail-making books.

The downstairs is given over to a changing succession of spirit companies to 'showcase' their brands, which for us meant trying to relax inside a wraparound Belvedere vodka ad.

This place is down the road from me and I plan on becoming a regular; cocktails are fantastic, staff are helpful and professional, bathrooms are clean and the space is great. Haven't tried the food but I'll be honest, it doesn't look great (deep-fried everything). Neverthless, I've recommended it to many of my close friends and will continue to visit. Well done guys!

I believe you should go and vist shaker & company yourself. I believe 3 stars is a poor review myself. It's a great venue I've never visited a place where they send so much time and effort on menu development and customer service. Brilliant venue 5 stars

Shaker is simply the best bar to open in London for years. The combination of relaxed informality and genuine guest service and expertise isfantastic and refreshing. Staff who know how to tend bar professionally, rather than be a "mixologist" are hard to find in this country, and this place has it. If I could give it more stars, I would. Thanks Shaker

I went here on a wednesday night and thought it was great. It was pretty quiet and not too far from the station for me to moan about after a day at work. cocktails were great and staff were friendly.

Only problem I had was the lack of food on that night. Was a shame as it would be 5 stars otherwise. hopefully next time i go and can sample the food :)

Other reviews are for Positively Fourth St...

Great little bar with great cocktails and service. The names might be slightly different but that's probably because the drinks are slightly different too! If you want some love and care put into your drinks then this is a spot for you.

Have been here a few times... most recently on their Thursday Blues Night. The cocktails are fantastic, and if you don't see something you like (unlikely) the bartenders will make you something even more fantastic. Yes its small but that just adds to the mood created by the cosy decor. If you had to twist my arm into a not-so-positive I'd say the bar food is average. Though, not average enough to keep me away from Shaker!
