Ale fans and discerning pub-goers make a beeline for this friendly, family-run boozer, set amid completely mundane surroundings in a non-descript corner of the City. Two main bar rooms await, the front one decorated with a beautiful illustration of the École des Beaux-Arts from 1865, but it's the bright red beer towels branded with the name of Brighton's Dark Star brewery that will most attract the beer-aficionado's keen eye.
Kernel brews from Bermondsey, Fiery Fox red cider from Gwynt y Ddraig, and Brodie's Irish Oyster stout are also here, complemented by doorstep sandwiches (filled with the likes of home-cooked roast beef with horseradish or cumberland sausage) for under three quid. There are also pizzas, burgers, jacket potatoes and other pub staples. First-name terms twixt staff and clientele add to an overall sense of bonhomie.
