From the outside, set on a busy traffic bridge, this looks like an archetypal JAG (Just Another Gastropub) makeover. Head through the pub to the terrace, though, and the scenery changes completely: table after table after table beneath large black umbrellas, all overlooking the slow-flowing canal. This terrace is the Grand Union's greatest asset, to be sure.

However, the interior is also attractive, done out with post-war propaganda photographs of the catering and drinking industries. There's enough chat-level indie din to bring in the twentysomethings, but there are couple-friendly low brown sofas in the street-level main bar area.

The beers are decent - Litovel, San Miguel and Becks Vier alongside Fuller's ales - although there are few surprises in the cocktail or wine lists.

There are gastro-standard mains; the highlight of the food menu is the dozen mix and match tapas plates. Not such a JAG after all.

This is a GREAT pub for food. I use it accasionally as my uncle lives nearby. The food is good traditional stuff all of which is excellently prepared, well presented and tastes good. It has become a bit pricey, but hey, the chefs need to be paid. It is a popular pub, particularly in the summer and can be noisy. I use it at lunch times during the week. Highly recommended.

Have been meaning to go to this pub for years and eventually got round to going this weekend, it's in a great position right on the canal and in a lovely area. The interior of the pub is decent and the garden looks directly out onto the canal, the selection of beers is pretty good too.

However, I was quite taken back by the way in which the staff conducted themselves, especially the bar 'manager'. They seemed to resent having people in the bar. When we made the booking we were told we could play our own music, what they failed to mention was that if they didn't like the music then they would come up with a weak excuse as to why they couldn't play it and instead play a bland and inappropriate mix of 'top 40'. They also refused to serve a couple we were with after no more than three or four drinks as they considered them too drunk, they were not, we complained and they continued to serve them. This was quite embarrassing for everyone involved.
