Balham's got no shortage of grand Victorian pubs, but cosy neighbourhood bars are still at a premium. This Mexican-themed bar is tiny, and popular with the area's many thirtysomethings who come here to sip on well-made margaritas and other Latin American cocktails (perfect caipirinhas, for instance).

The wine list is limited, with house wines starting at £3.60. Service is relaxed rather than professional, but hey, it's a Mexican bar. The dinner menu's ambitious, and although it can take an age for the food to materialise from the small kitchen, it's worth the wait. Enough for two to share, Tacuba platters contain perfectly crisp tostadas, soft tacos, bean-filled quesadillas and piquant fillings that complement the drinks.

On busier evenings, the more spacious basement is also deployed for bigger parties.

underwhelmed - expensive, TINY portions, one main turned up cold and they forgot the other main course - and didnt seem to care!!!!!!!!!!! Waitress could not speak English and was completely uninterested in her job or my food. So really pleased they forgot it meant we could leave early and get away not looking to go back - also music too loud and too clubby for time of day etc - had a delicious kebab from the Kebab Kid as a consolation ....
