Certainly the most 'designed' option of the many good pubs in Balham, Avalon is worth a visit just for a peek at the HG Wells-inspired dining room or to enjoy the brilliant garden (huge, beautifully landscaped; feral children and barbecues in good weather). But if you just want a comfortable pub with nice sofas and a heated smoking area, it can do that too.

We've had several meals in the dining room; although decent and of the meaty, solidly British variety - steaks, ox tongue, wood pigeon - they're a bit pricey unless you're taking advantage of one of the frequent meal deals. There's always a decent selection of real ales: Adnams Lighthouse, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Sharp's Doom Bar, say.

Great atmosphere and superb service. Food generally very good but steak recently very disappointing. Difficult to find fault with a seriously well run top London pub.

I went with my girlfriend and the family for a birthday sunday lunch. Love the decor, love the atmosphere. Food was a let down however, my g/f and her brother both ordered the cheese burger and asked for them well done (she is pregnant). They came out red raw and only warm. When we sent them back they came out againstill pink and even more worryingly her brother's came back with the cheese removed!

To be fair the manager was good and removed them from the bill and offered free dessert, but the meal was still a let down by then. Could have been that they were just too busy as it is very cool place and very popular....but not a great excuse.
