The Perritt brothers have ploughed a pretty penny into making the Mall Tavern's pair of double-aspect rooms look plush and pretty. New life has been breathed into the original wooden floorboards that lap around a striking central bar, while swish chandeliers hang from the ceiling and enormous glass cabinets showcase an assortment of classic culinary knick-knacks and antiques.
Jesse Dunford Wood's menu carries cheeky, almost childish nods to nostalgia: expect the likes of chicken kievs, fish fingers and mushy peas, and a chunky, Desperate Dan-style cow pie complete with horns made from bone marrow. But you can also drink here: a broad range of whiskies, the bar's major strength, is supplemented by three cask ales, some craft ciders, a short, classic cocktail list and some 30 wines.
