The Bathhouse in Bishopsgate, where burlesque and cabaret carry on in the vestiges of a fin-de-siecle Turkish bathhouse, has spawned an offspring in the more serene and suburban Stoke Newington.
Opposite The Lion pub on Church Street (where the Gold Bar once was), it's a small, split-level setting that's been given a good old gothic going-over: it almost looks like the work of Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen's frilly-wristed hands. Heavy fabrics abound with dark, heavy drapes hanging over the windows, and the walls and ceiling swathed in purple velvet. It further accents the eerie with the limbs and heads of plastic baby dolls embedded in the bar, skeletal wallpaper and prayer candles placed inside birdcages on the tables.
With black lacquered stools and wooden church pews, it's all a little dark. Even the wall in the small alfresco area out the back has been daubed in black. While this works well as a late-night venue and decadent drinking den, it remains to be seen what Church Street's chai-latte sipping, chattering classes make of it when, as planned, it opens as a pastry-purveying café during the day.
April has been earmarked for the opening of a kitchen serving platters and, a bit later, owners are planning a subterranean space set aside for DJs, dancing and the kind of naughty nights for which its bigger brother has become renowned. In the meantime, however, it mainly deals in drinks from a small L-shaped bar.
The concise cocktail list confines itself mostly to classics. The martini was well-made and so too was the French martini, and there's a couple of bespoke Baby Bathhouse creations: the Doris Gay brings elderflower liqueur, sweet vermouth and Finlandia grapefruit vodka together. The beers were basic and there were wines by the glass for a fiver but, from 5-7pm, a happy hour gets you two for one on beers and cocktails.

had a great time on the wkend - good happy hr deals!
wicked time on saturday, booked my birthday in the basement next month.. no hire fee and can put on my own djs!
Briliant night on Friday - stayed in the bar and drank cocktails. Would highly recommend.
Came along a couple of weeks ago and had a great time! the cocktails are gorgeous. the bar tender told me about nye there and it sounds a lot of fun!
Came along for Retro Chart Rundown last night. Great atmosphere in the bar and the drinks were delicious.
I am bias, but I loved the music the Dj played - and am a mega fan of this night at The George and Dragon too.
Really enjoyed visiting Stokey (I don;t come up here that often) but will do now (hopefully!). I liked the decor in the bar but would have liked to see the basement too, aparently they have really good club nights down there.
I love Stoke Newington and always keen to support a new venture, the building has housed several doomed bars in the past, but I had high hopes for the BBH. However, My first encounter with the refurbished bar was standing in line waiting my turn to get in (it's has a very small capacity), only to encounter a gatekeeper who was as warm and welcoming as a brick. The bar staff offer no greeting; they wait for the you to state your business, then wordlessly wander off to return some considerable time later with a very mediocre cocktail and a hefty price tag. The bar it's self is resplendent with Goth paraphernalia and dated custom wallpaper, downstairs is a a low-ceiling basement permeated with the heady scent of mold. I can only imagine people like it because they get a false sense of louche and decadent play-den when they visit or perhaps they derive of some level of gratification from neglect.
went to a birthday party here last night, all in all not bad.. great music and deco but it was let down a tiny bit by being was quite warm in the top bar and a bloody mary so spicy it almost blew my head off
good fun cocktail bar and only a short stroll (roll) home.
Awful place, it's only redeeming feature it it's opening hours. The staff are rude and utterly unhelpful, they have the attitude of the high end elite in a bar that looks like Cher's bedroom in the middle of Hackney FFS.
Much better places to go in Stoke Newington.
Club nights on the weekend are great if you dont fancy the kids in Dalston and upstairs is cool for just hanging out, about time the area got something like this rather than just the tired pub! cocktails are ace too.
very cute place! like a bar in a curiosity museum. great cocktail hour
was a huge fan of the bishopsgate venue but was really impressed with the baby bathhouse, same cool fun vibe, still got the cool (kinda weird) skeleton artworks and bits n bobs around but a tiny bit more relaxed, bit more my speed now i am the big 3-0!
We were shocked and very upset to read about your unpleasant experience with the staff from The Baby Bathhouse. We have taken this very seriously and have reviewed our staff members and management. Please feel free to contact The Baby Bathhouse as would like to offer a round complimentary drinks to make up for your unacceptable experience.
Thank You

Having been down there this weekend for their family fun day, I am surprised to read the comments below. We had a lovely time - very relaxed and friendly! We had our kids down (during the day) as well, who were running around (being kids) and the staff stayed smiling! The autumn cocktail list was running, which was just plain yummy. Will be visiting again, most definitely.
The barman was rude and couldn't even recommend a cocktail for me to try. He did make two but one of them curdled and was really unpleasant (oliver twist) and the other (kir royale) was served in a tumbler and made with ribena! such a shame that this barman let the whole place down because the bar and garden area are really lovely.
RUDE rude rude bar staff. Unsmiling and difficult. Waited 40 MINUTES for a drink to be made at an empty bar. The staff were unapologetic and then I listened to them being rude to various others of my friends throughout the evening.
A friend asked what cocktails the lady would recommend and she just shrugged and said "beer". Not helpful. I won't be going back.
Beautiful bar, but my visit was spoilt by the attitude of one of the bar staff, who was surly and unfriendly. I won't be going back.
Great local, polite staff, nice garden. I now go there every saturday. The best place for a drink in stoky.
Thanks for this review! Just a quick update - the GARDEN IS NOW OPEN, we'll be running a bbq on the weekend along with entertainment.
The Basement will be opening in the near future, but for sun over the weekend head to our garden which is open from 1pm till 9.30pm.
Love this place , it looks cool and it feels warm and love its big Brother .... Best bars in London in my humble opinion.. Just done the beer garden , which looks great ... Im there the nest time the suns out
It's as small as it looks in the picture, they have got a downstairs and garden but they haven't opened them yet.
Nice cocktails if a bit on the pricey side.
Some baby birdcages and branded wallpaper, a good bar it does not make.
A bit on the pretentious side for me but I am an old fart.
