Occupying two floors in a grand old pub that's had a major refit, Opera Tavern is low-lit, looks on-trend and is immediately appealing.
The extensive list of pricey bar snacks craftily meshes Italianate small plates and Spanish tapas - five-year-aged pata negra, a good selection of Italian cheeses - and there are nods to New York fashion (mini pork-and-foie-gras burgers).
The cooked dishes are put together with aplomb (a tower of braised short rib of beef balanced on a disc of polenta, for example).
The Italian and Spanish wines by the glass alone make this a destination bar, with a small selection of dry sherries (perfect with the charcuterie), and a catarratto from Sicily at only £3.85.
The service is delightful, but this place is already the worst-kept secret in Covent Garden, which could turn your quest for a table into a drama..
