Not so long ago, this pub was all swirly carpets, warm pints and cigarette smoke, but it's now been Botoxed. The lovely leaded windows with their stained-glass remain; however, the wood-panelled walls have been painted in oxblood and the boards have been laid bare, and Edwardian drawing-room mirrors now hang as ornaments.

The drinks have improved: there are now four real ales on tap, which might include Betty Stogs from the Skinner's brewery in Cornwall or O'Hanlon's Port Stout from down in Devon; a well-chosen selection of wines, with eight by the glass; and cheap cocktails.

The dining area at the back is the domain of chef Trish Hilferty, formerly of such notable enterprises as the Fox in Shoreditch, Great Queen Street in Covent Garden and the Anchor & Hope in Waterloo, who conjures up modern British dishes in a St-John-moved-on style.

This would be a five star review if they could only do puddings. Starters and mains are a meat eater's dream but puddings are always a let down. Nothing worng with the decor and staff are lovely, friendly and happy looking souls and service is excellent. Happy if Timeout reviewer doesn't go back, I will
