With the Gallagher brothers flying high in the charts (again), it seems like the perfect time to revisit the Met Bar, one of their old favourite haunts. In the '90s it purported itself to be the coolest bar in London, with a tyrannical membership/entrance policy that saw it bursting every night with the decade's hottest celebs, like… 'Eastenders' cast members and some All Saints.

But times have changed: a late licence and a strict bouncer are no longer enough to guarantee status. So the Met Bar's undergone a refurbishment and has opened its doors to all comers.

It's hard to see what all the fuss was about. It's a typically sleek and anonymous hotel bar on a street that sees practically no foot traffic, on a way to nowhere. Not many of the tables are especially appealing-we sat at the bar and had a couple of imaginative cocktails that were perfectly made but came with the expected Mayfair price tag.

There are many hotel bars in London now that offer a similar level of bartending expertise but do it in more appealing surroundings. As a spot for a late-night cocktail it's a good option, but we can't recommend it as a destination bar.

The Time Out review is pretty much spot-on. Exorbitant prices for no-better-than-average cocktails, and a surly crowd makes for an unappealing evening. I certainly wouldn't hurry back.
