They could have put a warning sign up. Something like 'Columnists be careful! There is a hole at the back of this stage.’ But they didn’t which is why, at the Press Gazette awards, I fell down the hole. This is also why I do not appear on any of the photographs of the winners. Still the judges said some very nice things about the column ('Michael Hodges’s writing is funny, insightful and poignant and writes about urban life with a candidness and intimacy which brings the reader immediately into his confidence'), even if I was crawling around under the stage amongst dust, dried up lemon slices and old party poppers when they said them. Surprisingly Slice of Life overcame strong challenges from Piers Morgan and John Simpson. Simpson liberated Kabul, I had a kebab in Peckham... it's a strange world. Feature continues

Hi, I was married to a Michael Hodges who alas died earlier this year. I haven't heard of yourself before but the article you wrote in Time Out the other week could have been written by him, re City of lots of Children! He was a publisher and teacher latterly. Michael has written plays, short stories and a film. He has also written articles on education i.e. The right to happiness? Going behind the scenes when looking for your perfect school for your little darlings. Forgive me for writing but I just wondered whether your family are related. I know there are a few Michael Hodges around, but I find rather uncanny the fact your writings are so similar to my Michael. Best wishes, Gentian.
