First performed in the UK at the Manchester International Festival in 2007, this colourful opera, based on the ancient Chinese legend of spiritual enlightenment, is directed by Chen Shi-Zheng, with music composed by Damon Albarn and design/animation by fellow Gorillaz star Jamie Hewlett. Featuring nearly 40 circus acrobats, martial artists and singers from China, with an orchestra of Western and traditional Chinese instruments. Performed in Mandarin with English surtitles.
