The Nature of Monsters - Clare Clark

Clare Clark’s London of 1719 is a putrid place which roars like the ocean, where the ash-heaps crawl with beggars and people rush about on business so urgent that the loss of even a minute would have dire consequences. Into this chaos is cast our co-narrator, headstrong 15-year-old Eliza Tally, after she falls pregnant by the local landowner’s cad of a son.

Albion - Alan Moore et al

'Albion' is Alan Moore and Shane Oakley's homage to the comics tradition that immediately preceded their early work and is an attractive blend of old and new. Full review

The Book of Samson - David Maine

A retelling of the biblical Samson's story with brilliant disregard for the reputations of both Samson and God. Suffused with sex and violence, as well as many of the trappings of the modern thriller, this is Bible bothering at its best. Full review

    Runt - Niall Griffiths

Set in the aftermath of the foot-and-mouth epidemic, a teenage boy leaves school to live with his uncle on a Welsh hill farm. With the inevitability of Greek tragedy, the story moves towards a savage conclusion in what the nameless narrator terms the 'High Parts'. Full review

I read Magic Lobsters and Flying Tagines on the plane to Morocco.  Full of comic insights, witchcraft and magic and of course sex. I also kindled The Hellespont by the same author - a more of a modern greek love story with a bit of a tragedy.

facinating story about Marocco, not another travelog! Below the surface, sex, intrigue, lust and jealousy run wild. The characters are real examples of the mad europeans who live in this exotic country.
