The London Literature festival is something of a misnomer: this massive celebration of literature is laudably international, even if it does take place on the South Bank.

This year, it kicks off with Arundhati Roy (July 2) talking about democracy – an international preoccupation if ever there was one – and continues with Sarah Waters (July 6), poet Benjamin Zephaniah (July 10) and several of the writers of the Ox-Tales short stories, including Jeanette Winterson, Kamila Shamsie, Hanif Kureishi and DBC Pierre (July 14).

There are events on biography with Clare Mulley and Alexander Masters, on Zimbabwe with Pettina Gappah and Caine Prizewinner Brian Chikwava (both July 4), and on the Austen industry (July 11), and even astronaut Buzz Aldrin (July 4) discussing his moon landing. And you can’t get much less parochial than that.
