The Canadian cabaret producer celebrates a decade of decadence

In 2002, Canadian Mark Henderson hit upon a new name and a new business when he began producing burlesque shows as Chaz Royal. He’s been one of the international scene’s leading showmakers ever since, with events ranging from London Burlesque Week to this year’s Edinburgh run of ‘Sexy Circus Sideshow’. Ahead of his ten-year anniversary shows at Bush Hall, Ben Walters asked Chaz to plunder his scrapbook for some key moments in his journey…

  • ‘History in the making’, 2004

    ‘After a full day of shooting in the venue I thought how great it would be to parade the girls outside the venue and drum up some attention. The photographer followed as we pranced around the side of the venue for an impromptu shoot in front of the phone boxes. I felt that I was witnessing history in the making: the photos felt iconic and the girls knew they were posing for something special. We were bringing burlesque to virgin audiences around the country.

    ‘The show that night in Middlesborough drew a crowd of 800 people. The majority of them were students who really didn’t know what to make of the show but by the end we won them over. Burlesque in Middlesborough was a hit!’
