Jonny Woo: 'Can I get an E please?'
1. He has had two particularly ace summers in Hoxton
'My time at The Bricklayers was brief but legendary during the summer of 1997. I spent one Sunday morning asleep in the door with punters walking over me before rejoining the throng around a bottle of tequila at the bar. I did the world’s best worst pub quiz where not even I got the questions right: “What was George Michael’s first solo song?” Answer: “A Different Corner” Wrong, Woo!
'The party I’m most proud of promoting is Radio Egypt which ran at The George & Dragon and then 291 Gallery during the summer of 2003. It was truly a London moment. I had just returned from New York and I wanted to create a platform for the work I had been experimenting with there. Hundreds would crowd the corner of Hackney Road, the floor bounced and curtains were torn from the rails. I ran around naked, covered in tar and feathers and the night closed its doors with a bouncy castle and full fir-tree forest.’

2. He’s a trained dancer…
‘I did drama at university in Birmingham and then went on to train at London Contemporary Dance School. Dance was my vocation but I found keeping up the daily classes too much after a while, and the alternative drag scene in New York proved more in tune with my creative tendencies and dedication to nightlife. The dance gave me the legs, which I am always getting out, and limbered me up. The drama gave me the vocals. I still use it all. In many ways I think what I do now is akin to the types of theatre like Brecht and Artaud that I used to study.'
3. …And a tranny breaker
‘Pablo at Bistrotheque wanted me to host a tranny lipsynching night, and to begin with it was mainly Radio Egypt’s finest as contestants. We did several seasons which were totally mad. Spanky was a fine tranny find as were Ryan Styles and Russella. Special mention to tranny faves Miss Jade and Claudia Balls who always turn up and turn it out. The Bistrotheque Annual Drag Ball was the finale to this. I would still do it but it may need a bigger venue now than Bistrotheque.’
4. Jonny Woo is (nearly) his real name
‘It’s Jonathan Wooster.’
5. He knows the secret to successful voguing
‘Keep the wrists relaxed yet precise, and always look like you really couldn't be that bothered.’
6. He harbours a secret long-term crush
‘There is a guy whom I have had a major crush on for five years. I will not say who he is. He may know. I am too shy to tell him.’
7. He can’t really cook
‘The only thing I ever cook is pasta with coriander pesto from a jar and cream, with cherry tomatoes and parmesan cheese. I eat it all the time.’
8. His bedroom is painted magnolia
'I’ve lived in Hoxton for 12 years. I don’t envisage ever living too far from the area. My room is magnolia although if it was my flat I would have heavy floral paper or paper with gorgeous patterns. I have some large original photos of trannies on my walls. One is of my friend Russella; she looks like a Russian housewife. Another is of a trannie in Texas called Leslie who protests her right to be left alone on the street. People think it is me.'
9. He likes a good ride
‘I love all funfairs. I am spellbound by Waltzers in particular. I used to go to Margate all the time as a kid. I recently went to Blackpool and my favourite ride was The Steeplechase.’
10. He believes in, erm, usual things
‘I believe that I have womb memories and I believe that the ouija board really works.’
11. His lyrics in songs performed in 'International Woman of Mister E' are about...
‘Step Step Step Step Step turn, keep it fast, keep it sharp but keep it real’, from 'Woman Of Mass Destruction'.
'I wanted to write a pop song-type lyric; it's just about walking fab like a tranny on a runway who has the look spot on.'
'I hold the world record for tucking my cock', from 'Sports Kit Tranny'.
'If it were an Olympic sport I would be the fastest at strapping down my penis and testes to make it look like I had female genitals.'
'Maybe it was the last shards of vodka that made him not seem to care so much anymore', from 'Snow'.
'It’s a reminiscence of the end of a drunken night when the stillness of snowfall and remnants of vodka made everything seem immaterial or worthless.'
‘When I’m riding bareback, all I think about is me’, from 'Bareback Riding'.
'It’s about having unsafe sex. Ultimately, it's a completely selfish act when neither party holds the other’s well-being in any regard, let alone their own safety. It is purely about the fulfilment of their own sexual pleasure.'
Jonny Woo’s ‘International Woman of Mister E’ is at Soho Theatre, July 14-19.
