James Corden and Ruth Jones's sleeper hit sitcom completes its journey to the heart of the mainstream, mapping out a traditional family Christmas replete with surface warmth, undercurrents of tension and surprises of both the welcome and disconcerting variety.
As usual, the show’s strength lies in the wonderful ensemble cast – whether he’s communicating his wide-eyed incredulity at the concept of mint-infused Baileys or declaring his undying love for Chris Rea, Rob Brydon’s Bryn is capable of stealing the show at any given moment. Elsewhere, Mick’s following Nigella rather than Jamie this year and finding lunch preparations somewhat laborious as a result. Dave is gently nudging Smithy aside in the fatherhood stakes. And Gavin is preparing to drop a bombshell that could well ruin the festive moods of both his mother and best friend. Likeable without being as snappy as usual – the jury’s still out on whether ‘Gavin And Stacey’ quite possesses the heft to hold the nation in its festive thrall.
