Mon Dec 21, 10-10.10pm, Sky1
For all the stürm und drang of its (in reality) rather limp and derivative entertainment output, it’s in the field of drama where Sky1 has really pushed the boundaries. Two Terry Pratchett adaptations and Easter’s ‘Skellig’ have displayed impressive ambition and flashes of real class. Can we expect the same from this series of stand-alone, silent, festive shorts? The omens are promising, with each boasting genuine talent (Bill Nighy, Peter Capaldi, um, Ross Kemp) and behind (Neil Gaiman, Roy Williams, Tony Grisoni). Disappointingly, there were no DVDs for tonight’s opener, which stars Timothy Spall and Natascha McElhone as two outcasts/ hermits in a modern fairy tale; companionship and enough warmth to melt a snowdrift seem set to become rapid bedfellows. The series runs nightly at 10pm until New Year’s Eve, and should be well worth ten minutes of your time – if only out of curiosity. Feature continues
